Alabama State Flower History:
During an Alabama legislative session of 1927, Representative T. E. Martin, Montgomery County , introduced a bill to make the Goldenrod the state flower of Alabama . This bill was passed and became law on September 6, 1927 .
On August 26, 1959 , the state flower was changed to the camellia. Ladies in
Butler County preferred the camellia since the goldenrod is a wildflower. They
called the goldenrod a weed.*
The Camellia flower has several variant species. In June 1999(Acts 1927, No. 541.), the Alabama state legislature decided that the Camellia japonica L, was destined to be the state flower of Alabama . Since the Camellia is not a native plant to Alabama , the legislature decided on a state wildflower that same day.
